William I

Peace

After the two flare ups of Dover and Exeter, southern England was very peaceful. This provided the opportunity for Matilda to come to England and be crowned as William's queen. She became the first Queen of England. The past wives of Kings were just called "Lady". William's next adventure was to tame the northern part of England. It took him several years to do this. It became so unsafe that he had to send Matilda back to Normandy. He also had trouble finding soldiers to fight for him, so William had to offer them more land. It wasn't until 1081 that William had conquered all of England. But by 1072 he had conquered most of it.

Domesday Book

After a few more small revolts and problems with taxes, William decided that he needed to have more information about England. So he made the Domesday book. It was a complication of history and statistics in England. William sent out four people all across England who went to every town and farm. The Domesday Book was completed within a year. It is the most detailed piece of history from the 11th century.
